Hawaii Speakers Bureau is Off to a Good Start

Jul-29-2020  |

June 2020 was the last month of the 2019 – 2020 Toastmasters Fiscal Year and despite all the setbacks caused by the pandemic COVID-19; Hawaii’s Toastmasters community proudly reported many positive newsworthy achievements.

In the first half of 2020, Toastmasters in Hawaii added four new clubs: Pearl Harbor Toastmasters Club for employees and service members at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Facility; Champions Toastmasters, a community club on Maui with meeting place at UH Maui Campus; and two advanced clubs - Pathways Central and Hawaii Speakers Bureau.

Notably our district achieved Distinguished status; the only District in Region 2 for meeting all milestones of club growth with chartered clubs, membership payments and quality educational achievements.

July 21st, 2020 marked the grand opening day for Hawaii Speakers Bureau, the club’s first regular club meeting. It was a packed, lively and spirited Zoom event! All three Speakers spoke from Pathways projects. Jennifer Wilson spoke about A Simple Happiness Ritual. Terry Chodosh, a former secret service agent, told a hilarious tale about hiking with President Jimmy Carter in the Himalayan Mountains. Suzanne Sullivan shared the effects of good public relations and tips to get started.

Hawaii Speakers Bureau, an advanced club, has the membership requirement that one must be a Toastmaster in good standing with at least one other club. As is with all Toastmasters clubs; the core mission remains the same - helping members better their skills in public speaking and leadership. As an advanced club, Hawaii Speakers Bureau aims to help members improve and fine tune their speaking skills.

How is Hawaii Speakers Bureau doing this?
Rose Kirland, charter member and club president says “Toastmaster club members voiced priority goals, to become a professional speaker, improve their public speaking, advance in the World Champion of Public Speaking, or the Accredited Speaker program and excel in their leadership skills.”
‘We took those goals, formulated a plan and executed tactics for success! Every chartered member contributed to this vision.” says Kirland.

Hawaii Speakers Bureau Virtual Meeting

Starting August 2020, and throughout the year, the club will host keynote guest speakers who will share their expertise -- what it takes and how to do -- as a public speaker, professionally or otherwise. This is an opportunity to learn from skilled Toastmasters and other professionals, the secrets of their success. The opportunities for networking, practice, and support of emerging speakers are surmountable.

John Coleman, club’s Vice President of Public Relations, and Immediate Past Distinguished District 49 Director added, “Thanks to personal ties of club members to top world speakers, we can expect to see other World Champions of Public Speaking and highly acclaimed motivational speakers at our meetings.”

Guest speakers through the end of 2020 include, August 18, William Hung; September, Lance Miller; October, Vicky Ferrer and Kelly Swanson; November, Sheryl Roush; and December, Willie Jones.

Hawaii Speakers Bureau meets virtually over Zoom. It is open to guests, members of other Toastmasters clubs and the general public. Hawaii Speakers Bureau plans to hold in-person meetings in the future. For more information please contact Public Relations Club officer John Coleman.
