District Director's Message

Aloha and Happy New Year!

A new year is upon us, and I wish that this year will be a safe, healthy, and prosperous year for you, your family, and our Toastmasters family!

If you were able to rise to the challenge and give a toast at your family gathering, please email me a picture of your family event, your name, your club, and describe the toast you gave, and we would love to make a collage of this awesome event.

Respectfully,
Sepiuta Holakeituai, DTM, District Director 2020 - 2021

We Remember Jason Baguio

By now, most Toastmasters in Hawaii know the very sad news that Jason Baguio passed away on January 5th. We are deeply saddened by Jason’s passing and how unexpectedly it came. Jason had a positive impact on Toastmasters in Hawaii, and we will miss him dearly. He was a beloved member of Hawaiian Dredging Club and two advanced clubs: Na Hoku Kai and Laulima Toastmasters Club. He was also a member of our District Public Relations Team. Please visit our Facebook group to read gentle remembrances about Jason by Sepi HolakeituaiJicky Ferrer, and Dean Masai. Also, please share your thoughts and prayers under any of their posts. We extend our sincere condolences to Jason’s family and to all that love him. Jason, there is a place for you in our hearts, and you will live on in our memories. Jason's funeral service will take place in February or March. We will provide the details when they are available.

Podcasts

Is There a Podcast in Your Future? You may be an avid podcast listener or ready to start your own show; either way, take in some tips from The Toastmasters Podcast co-host Greg Gazin, DTM. In this article, he breaks down the logistics of preparing for, recording, and sharing a podcast. Make sure your earbuds are in so you can listen to special podcasts throughout the article.

Or join and help Joy Turbeville and Keith Olson with a Podcast and radio show with Sherry Bracken of PBS on the Big Island. Contact Keith Olson for more information at [email protected]. (We are saddened by the passing of Jason Baguio who was a great Toastmaster and Podcaster who was also working on this project. We give our sincere thanks to Jason for all he has done for District 49).

PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER's Message

Dear Toastmasters Ohana in Hawaii,

As we enter the year of 2021, it is apparent that virtual meetings will be here for a while, perhaps longer than we originally anticipated. We truly miss some of the elements of the traditional in-person meetings, but at the same time, the new medium opened a plethora of amazing opportunities. We have remarkable guests from all around the world visiting and speaking at our club meetings. Thanks to easier logistics, district events have the highest attendance as far as I can remember.

Have a Happy New Year 2021!

Positively,
Slava Slavik, CC, PM5, PI4, Public Relations Manager

Toastmasters of the Month December 2020

Our December 2020 Member Spotlight recognizes 4 leaders from HMCOA Bilingual Toastmasters Club – John Zhang, Aaron Wu, Lily Chen, and Robert Wu. Check the full story on our website about HMCOA Toastmasters, a club that almost ceased to exist. However, thanks to the fact that the club meetings are virtual and accessible from places beyond Hawaii, it’s now the district's biggest club. It has 34 regular members and meetings attended by 40-50 people. What a fantastic transformation!

How to Win Table Topics

Mrs. T (a.k.a. Joy Turbeville from Kamehameha Toastmasters) added another video to her series of speech tips. It is her 14th video – please watch it here. Joy will guide you through a few examples that will help you better prepare to deliver short, impromptu speeches. Perhaps you might even win a Table Topics speech contest. We recently added Table Topics back to the official 2021 district contest schedule.

District 49 Throwback: Beauty is Skin Deep

Starting today, inside each newsletter, we’ll have a link to an exciting performance of a District 49 member that was recorded in the past. We will be featuring mostly contest speeches, but we will also share your leadership and communication skills building tips or other interesting old recordings you might have.

Let’s kick off this new feature with Greg Ching, DTM, from Waikiki Club. Greg is currently the longest participating member of Toastmasters in Hawaii. He joined Toastmasters in 1974. In 2019, he received the District 49 Lifetime Achievement Award. Let’s bring back to the spotlight one of his funniest performances. Here is a link to Greg’s speech called Beauty is Skin Deep from District 49 Tall Tales Speech Contest, probably in 2013. Enjoy!
