District Director's Message

Mālōl ‘e lelei my fellow Toastmasters!

May is here, and I hope you all wore your favorite lei on May Day (May 1st).  We are a month away from the completion of the 2021-2022 toastmaster year.  As we look at the year and how far we’ve gotten, we are doing great!

As a District, we do have goals that are listed for us to achieve.  We will strive to reach the Toastmasters goal set for our District.  Membership is Key!   Club meetings are much more fun when a meeting is full of participants. We continue to ask that you invite guests and former members to your meetings.  We ask that you work with your Area Directors, Division Directors, Public Relations Manager, Administrative Manager, Finance Manager, and Key 3 with the proactive effort to call those that did not renew this past renewal period.

Respectfully,
Sepiuta Holakeituai, DTM, District Director 2020 - 2021
[email protected]

Business Meeting Highlights - Friday, May 7, 2021

Congratulations to Our Newly Elected Key Three

The Key Three District leaders for 2021-2022 are:

  • District Director: Kory Ikeda, MS 3, EC1,
  • Program Quality Director: Gerald Toyomora, DTM, and
  • Club Growth Director: Charen Kepler, DL4.

The Ron Mobley Lifetime Achievement Award

District 49 Lifetime Achievement Award has been adopted, and we have renamed it the Ron Mobley Lifetime Achievement Award.  This award is for a District 49 member who resides in Hawaii, achieved Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation, and has given back to the District.  More information regarding this award for the 2021-2022 year will be announced in June.

The Corporate Recognition Award

For the 2020-2021 year, we recognize Hawaii State Federal Credit Union and Nordic PCL for their sponsorship of HSFCU Toasters and Nordic PCL.  These corporations have sponsored their clubs for more than two years, have provided membership dues, meeting locations, and actively encourage employees to join their corporate clubs.  Click this site to see all District 49 Corporate Awards. https://district49.org/corporate-recognition-awards/rporate Awardees.

PROGRAM QUALITY DIRECTOR's Message

Aloha,

I hope everyone took advantage of our Virtual District Conference.  Although the events are complete, check out the updated District podcast page for an interview with International President Richard E. Peck, DTM.  The podcast conversation provides a different perspective than the Townhall event.  You’ll want to view this podcast and the previous episodes, which are now available!

Sincerely,
Kory Ikeda, ACB, ALB, Program Quality Director,
[email protected]

Let’s get to Distinguished Together!

Congratulations to our clubs who have already earned distinguished or better status for 2020-2021, and congratulations to all our club members in all clubs on your educational achievements this year!  So many of our clubs have achieved enough Distinguished Club Program goals to become distinguished or better but need membership growth.  We have just over two and a half months to build our club memberships and move our “almost” distinguished clubs to distinguished or better.  Let’s all “Beat the Clock” and boost our membership so we can be distinguished together!

Club Officer Elections

It’s time to start selecting next year’s leaders.  Clubs should be holding elections this month and turning in officer lists for 2021-2022 in June.  We’ll be drawing for clubs that turn in their officer list by June 15 to receive a set of club officer pins.

Club Officer Training

Save the date for our 2021-2022 Club Officer Training.  Club officers must attend district-sponsored training twice a year, round one in summer and round two in winter.  District 49 usually offers multiple opportunities for training in each round to suit our leaders’ schedules.  The first opportunity for round one training is Saturday, June 12.

CLUB GROWTH DIRECTOR's Message

Aloha Awesome Fellow Toastmasters!

We had a great District Conference!  Give yourself a hand for all the accomplishments you and your fellow Toastmasters have achieve so far this year!  Yes, the Toastmaster year is almost up.  Just a few more weeks and it’s is over.  How have you navigated your journey so far?  It is not too late to attain your goals you set out to do at the beginning of the year.  Let’s all do what we can to achieve our goals and make our District Distinguished this year!

Mahalo,
Gerald Toyomura, DTM, Club Growth Director 2020-2021
[email protected]

What Time is it?  It’s Beat the Clock Time!

Toastmasters are taught to run meetings on time, finish speeches on time and reach membership goals on time. In that spirit, Beat the Clock is an excellent motivator for finishing the year on schedule—on time and with record numbers!  Make it your club’s goal to earn the Beat the Clock award and encourage every member to participate.  Clubs adding five new, dual, or reinstated members with a join date between May 1 and June 30 receive a Beat the Clock ribbon to display on the club’s banner.  Qualifying clubs also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order.  (The discount code expires six months from the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.)

Applications and payments for members with a join date between May 1 and June 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than June 30.  The addition of transfer and charter members does not count toward Beat the Clock credit.

We will reveal the winning clubs online within a few weeks of the submission deadline. Winning clubs should allow up to 10 business days to receive their award if they are located in the United States and up to 21 business days if they are outside of the United States.

Have an Open House to attract new members and old members!

Mahalo to Joy Freglinger, our CGT Representative to Kauai, for coming up with the suggestion of having a “Reunion” Open House and invite previous members to your meeting!  You can meet old friends, talk/speeches of old times, have nostalgic games and prizes, and much more.

Congratulations to Sprient Honolulu Toastmasters and the Hawaii Entrepreneur Clubs from coming back from 0 or near 0 members to 7 members!

They need just one more member to bring their club back to Good Standings in Toastmasters!  And be “8 is Great!”  This will also make our District Distinguished in Paid Clubs, bring up our paid clubs from currently 64 to 66 clubs!  Hawaii Entrepreneur Club was the former Honolulu Finest Toastmaster Club, and under Jicky Ferrer, DTM brought it back from losing the club.  We wish them the best!

Let’s keep our Ohana together, bring back all our Toastmasters, and finish this year strong! We can do it!  We are Toastmasters!

 “Hana Hou!”

We can make our District Distinguished again!

We need:

1.) 66 Paid Clubs.  We need 2 more new clubs and not lose any clubs.

2.) 2,551 Payments (New or renewed memberships).  We need 381 new or renewed memberships (208 up from last month!)

3.) 26 Distinguished Clubs with required number of members.

We need 15 more clubs with 20+ members or 5+ members from their base members, plus 5 goals achieved.

We can do it!  Let’s Beat the Clock! See what you can do in your club to make this happen!

PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER's Message

Dear Toastmasters Ohana,

Last week, we just concluded our 7-day marathon of the 2021 District Conference. One of the conference highlights was a visit by the 2020 – 2021 Toastmasters International President Richard E. Peck. Richard generously provided his time and participated in a town hall meeting moderated by Gloria Shishido and delivered a closing keynote on the last day of the conference. Richard also connected with our podcast host Laura Reid and shared his experiences as an International President during the covid time and provided valuable advice on leadership. With Richard’s episode, we are also releasing the previously recorded episodes with Sherry Imamura-Ryan and Carole Wiedmeyer. See below for details.

Positively,

District 49 Podcast Is Back!

I’m happy to announce that our District 49 Podcast called in honor of Jason Baguio “Be Positive. Be Spontaneous. Have fun.” has three new episodes recorded in March, April, and May. As our amazing podcast host, Laura Reid was competing in the speech contests, and we had to hold on releasing the episodes, not to give Laura uneven exposure compared to other contestants. With the district round of the contests completed last week, we have rereleased all three new episodes:

March 2021: Carole Wiedmeyer – Carole talks about her expertise in marketing and tips clubs could use to attract more members. Listen here.

April 2021: Sherry Imamura Ryan – Sherry shares her ESL background and why she loves to help so much in our district. Listen here.

May 2021: Richard E Peck – Our current International President has a good message for all future leaders: …titles don’t make the person – the person makes the title… Listen here.

District 49 Throwback – Greg Ching – Life Without Limits

This month, we are showcasing a speech by Greg Ching, one of the three District 49 Lifetime Achievement Awardees and currently a longest-serving Toastmaster member in our district(for more than 46 years.) The speech is from 2011 and most likely from a club meeting or a pre-district contest round, and it is called Life Without Limits.

This Book Could Be Yours! (2nd out of 3)

The lucky winner of the first book giveaway of Heart of a Toastmaster is Leslie Tyson from Pineapple Toastmasters Club. CONGRATULATIONS! Leslie, please expect your book signed by the author in the mail.

We have two more books to give away, one in May and one in June. If your name is not in the drawing basket yet, it is easy; just email your first and last name to [email protected]. All emails received by the end of May will qualify for the next drawing.

Heart of a Toastmaster was written by motivational speaker Sheryl Roush. Sheryl visited our Hawaii Speaker's Bureau club in March 2021.

From a book review by F.J. Smith on Amazon: "Fear of speaking in public is very common. In fact, some surveys show it to be the most common fear. The good news is that there is a readily available, effective, and even low-cost way to reduce that fear: Toastmasters International. This book is a collection of short essays by and about people who have overcome their fears by joining Toastmasters..."

Member of the Month for April 2021 – Rose Kirland

Our writer Aaron Robbie interviewed Rose about her latest significant achievement, chartering a new Spanish English Bilingual Club, and got a beautiful intimate profile of Rose starting with her family roots that she attributes to her current success.

Thank you Rose for your help building new clubs and participating as a Member of the Month for April 2021.
