2022 District 49 Conference | Town Hall Meeting

This event is a part of the 2022 District 49 Conference.

This town hall event will provide an opportunity to hear reasons for the upcoming proposals for approval at the Toastmasters International Annual Business meeting and the possible effects on the District and clubs. Once voted on by the members, it will take effect as delineated in the proposals. How will the hybrid Toastmasters International Convention planned for August 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee impact you? What about the World Headquarters joint efforts with Districts in marketing, such as television advertising and corporate club growth initiatives?

Toastmasters’ 2021–2023 International Director
Karen Lucas, of San Marino, California, is the chief operations officer for Ashlar Industries, where she has worked for the past eight years. A Toastmaster since 2007, Lucas is an active member of eight clubs. She is a charter member of her home club, Caltech Toastmasters, in Pasadena, California and a member of Smedley Chapter One Club. She has held a number of high-profile leadership positions within Toastmasters and has attained the Distinguished Toastmaster designation—the highest level of educational achievement in the organization. As a member of the Toastmasters International Board of Directors, Lucas is a “working ambassador” for the organization. She works with the Board to develop, support, and modify the policies and procedures that guide Toastmasters International in fulfilling its mission.

Toastmasters’ 2016–2017 International President and an Australian Businessman
Thirty years ago Mike Storkey joined the Whitsunday Toastmasters club (in Queensland, Australia), little knowing where it would lead him. Mike, who is very competitive became a District Table Topics Champion and has also won the District Evaluation competition, but it was the leadership track where he finally found his ambition leading, culminating in being Toastmasters International President in 2016-2017.Mike is also a Rotarian, having been awarded a Paul Harris Fellow (for services to the community) and is still actively involved in Rotary.Mike has been involved in Corporate Outreach for his home Toastmasters district initiating a methodology to increase involvement of corporations and sustainability. His great passion is mentoring and his mantra of “Remember The Member” continues to be the driving force behind his active membership.

Kory Ikeda

District 49’s 2021–2022District Director
Kory Ikeda is an engineer with Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company and a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. A Toastmaster for 13 years, Ikeda has been a member of his home club, Hawaiian Dredging Toastmasters, since 2009 and is also a member of Na Hoku Kai Advanced and Aloha Parliamentarians Toastmasters clubs. Prior to serving as a District Leader, Ikeda's first venture beyond the club was in speech contests as a volunteer and later as a contestant. He has served as an Area Director and Administration Manager, elected Club Growth Director and Program Quality Director prior to being elected District Director for the 2021-2022 program year.

Gloria Shishido

Toastmasters’ 2014–2016 International Director
Gloria Shishido is a Distinguished Toastmaster, Past International Director, 2014-2016, Past  District Governor, 2006-2007 and District 49 Pathways Guide, 2019.  She holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Gloria’s Bachelor of Science degree was in Medical Technology.  She retired from The Queen’s Medical Center after 38 years in clinical laboratory and human resource management.   Gloria also retired from the Hawaii State Center for Nursing as a project coordinator.A Toastmaster for over twenty years, Gloria is a member of Aloha, Windward Winners, Liliuokalani Toastmasters Clubs and advance clubs, Na Hoku Kai Toastmasters, Pathways Central and Hawaii Comedy Central which she was the club sponsor this year and current Club President.As the District Governor, she led her leadership team to a Distinguished District status.    As a former Toastmasters International Board of Directors member, Gloria was a “working ambassador” for the organization to develop and support policies and procedures to guide Toastmasters International.  Gloria has a passion for life long learning and making a difference in the lives of the people she comes into contact.
